Upgrading your electrical switchboard is one of the most important decisions you can make for the safety of your home and family. Your electrical switchboard acts as a gateway for all the power running through your property, whether that be from the street or a solar panel system. Often, in older homes, you might experience a power loss when running a few appliances at once. This is caused by an out-dated electrical switchboard with an older fuse box that is rarely equipped with a safety switch – something that can be very dangerous! Thankfully, this issue is easily resolved; all our team at North Lakes & Surrounds Electrical have to do is perform a simple inspection of your switchboard to determine if the fuse box, wiring and circuits are safe or whether you’ll need a repair and upgrade. If you need an upgrade, it will likely be due to not having residual current devices (RCDs) or circuit breakers fitted which means they are not equipped to keep up with the electrical power demands of today’s technology.

For design, installation or upgrade, our team of electricians in north Brisbane can with the recommendation and installation of energy efficient lighting within your home. Over the years, our energy use for household lighting has increased due to larger homes requiring more light fittings. Now, we are using up to 25% of our home energy budget just on lighting. With more energy efficient light bulbs, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), you can reduce the cost of your electric bill.
LED light bulbs can last up to ten times longer than compact fluorescent light bulbs and much longer again than the traditional incandescent lights. They are also more durable as without the filament of an incandescent light bulb, they are solid and not so easily damaged. There is no mercury used in the manufacturing of LEDs and they generate almost no heat, producing approximately 3.4 BTUs per hour compared to an incandescent light’s 85 BTUs per hour.

When it comes to office fit-outs, you have to think about every aspect, including the lighting. Ensuring you have the correct level of lighting for the type of work that will be carried out on your premises actually falls under a health and safety law. This is why our team at North Lakes & Surrounds Electrical also assist in reviewing your lighting requirements to ensure you meet the current standard. When adjustments are needed or installations required, we can provide your business with significant savings by using our energy efficient lighting solutions and control technology which will reduce your power consumption.
Other ways to reduce your running costs include:
Ensuring task lighting is correctly placed
Installing movement sensors (a great solution for areas that are not commonly accessed such as storage)
Installing individual light switches for each area so lights can be turned off when an area is not in use.
Ensuring lighting is not excessive (great for areas with lots of natural lighting)
Selecting the right type of lighting for the area e.g. replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or replacing halogens with LEDs
Installing dimmers when recommended
Many variables contribute to the needs of a commercial lighting solution. For example, an office environment will not require the same lighting as a factory. Some other variables include the amount of natural light in the workspace, the specific job that will be undertaken in the area where the lighting is installed and the size of the room.
To extend the life of your ceiling fan and wall controller, start your fan on the highest speed. Once the fan is running fast, turn the controller down to the desired setting.
